Me and my friend lewis where fishing on DesMoines river a few years ago .after fishing all day and watching lewis catch a few fish on our last stop before heading back up river. We stopped at cement slab the DNR uses in fall time to pump water into runnels bottom for the duck hunters . We tied the boat up and threw nice big sunfish into the hole on back side of cement slab then bam got hit. Ended up pulling in 23lb flathead only fish I caught all day. True story but what a way to end the day with big smile on my face .

Using that sunnie would net you a hefty fine or worse in MN or WI. I've heard of muskie fisherman using 1-2# perch on bobbers back in the day. I use redhorse, not worth losing my rods and boat over.

In Florida it works like this.   If you catch a Brim on fishing pole then you can use it as bait.   If you catch it in a net and use it for bait you broke the law.   You can use minnows or shinners from a net but that's it.
