Brand new to the shotgun world and just purchased a new-to-me Mossberg 88 Maverick (the guy promised his grandmother had only shot it on weekends - honest!). It's in good condition and fills the need I had for it which was home defense.

My question is if it's worth it to modify it at all or just save up and purchase a higher-end Mossberg like a 590 (whenever they become available again)? If I modify it what's worth doing? What are some considerations in terms of extra shell holders, picatinny rails, different sights, etc.?

Thanks in advance.

The Maverick pump is not made in America barrels are made in Mexico as well as receivers and other parts . Parts are sent to Texas and assembled here in the states . for what they cost I would look for a police dept trade in 870. You would be light years ahead . if you must have a Mossburg. Look for a 500 or 590. Much better guns quality wise
I hope this helps

I have owned a Maverick 88 and found it to be reliable. I don't think it would be a good platform for upgrades but it makes a great truck gun.

No offense to Nulook45 but I haven't seen a police trade in 870 for Maverick 88 prices in over a decade. Most police trade in 870 were going for $400 and up before COVID in my area.

While the Maverick 88 may not be the absolute best quality it is ‘good enough’.
Black Friday Deals around me go from $159-$189. How can you go wrong?

FYI I prefer a Remington 870 personally.
