I joined a while ago but haven't had a chance to introduce myself. As you can tell by my screen name I'm in Law Enforcement and have been for 15 years. I held a number of jobs before becoming an LEO, I was a Marine for what seems a lifetime ago. I currently work as a Detective for a Sheriff's Office in Southeastern North Carolina. I have always liked shotguns and purchased an 870 from AI&P Tactical for use on duty.

A jarhead and LEO, man what is this forum coming to?   Wait, so am I but retired.  Well, being compared to me is no compliment.   Welcome anyway [smile].  I  am encouraged when LEO's come on board because as we discussed the shotgun seems to be dying in Law Enforcement and that is a damn shame.   Anyone, Civilian, Military or LE who would go to my web site and on the link "Gun Fight" read about the shoot off I witnessed at the Metro Dade Police Range between an 870 and an SMG would understand just how much initial fire power the 12 ga offers.   They might change their Religion after that.

Jump in any time as there are other people in the profession here and some serious knowledgeable gun loving 2nd Amendment people here who support you and know the thankless job you do.   It is growing slowing after being taken off line and rebuilt and of course it is always slow in the summer as we find so much to do during the warmer months.  But kick in anytime with coments and input.  I remember or conversation and you are Old School and have much to share.

Thanks JD, a lot of the newer guys in my agency and in Law Enforcement think that the shotgun is dead, I completely disagree. It is just as much a part of our arsenal as it always has been and while I do like my patrol rifle when it's time to search a building or attempting a high risk warrant service on my way out of the car I grab the 870.

With a patrol rifle ammo is very limited as far as what types, with a shotgun there are many different types of rounds(buckshot, slugs, less lethal and breaching).

Like I said a shotgun is versatile and still very relevant to Law Enforcement and I also have one for home defense, nothing fancy it's a plain jane out of the box 870 youth model 20 gauge that I put an 18 1/2 barrel on. I went with the 20 gauge so my wife could use it if I'm out late.

People think a 20 gauge isn't good for home defense, I always ask them "you ever been hit with 20 gauge 71/2 shot at 8-10 feet?" I have worked shootings where people have been shot with a 20 gauge from those distances and it didn't end well for them.

Thanks again for allowing me to join the forum and thanks again for the 870, works like a charm.

Howdy deputy584!
Never been in Law Enforcement. But with thanks to my uncle (Sam) I do have some experience hunting bad guys. And that was a long time ago.

The revolver, like the shotgun, gets the same attitude by some folks. Well I figure any firearm that goes bang and can repete is worth having, using and maintaining. A loaded wheel gun beats an empty whatever every time[smile]
