Another of my heroes gone. R. Lee Ermy was most famous for his role as Gunnery Sgt. Hartman in Full Metal Jacket, but I remember seeing him as the AC of MAJ Kilgore's C&C bird in Apocalypse Now
He was always an advocate for service members, involved with The Wounded Warrior Project and other veteran's organizations. He had a great TV show that featured famous military weapons, and wrote for several gun magazines. He will be missed. Just yesterday morning before we found out, my son woke up his good friend who often stays with us with Revillie, followed by Gunny's famous scene in the barracks where he dresses down the new 'boots', and the Rifleman's Creed. (Hunter, my's son's friend, will be re-entering the Army in August, he was recovering after he was shot accidently in the BRM phase of Basic)

I can think of no better epitaph than to borrow part of one used for an anonymous Marine buried on a Pacific island in WWII;

'...and when he gets to Heaven, to St. Peter he will tell; "One more Marine reporting, Sir, I've served my time in hell".

I admired him for his work with Toys For Tots.  There were donation centers where you could actually meet R. Lee although I never did.
